A Time Of Change

You are changing things.  Right now.

Whether you are aware of it or not.  Your mere presence is rippling.  Evolving into reality.  Your impact is everywhere.  Because of you, the world that we have will not always be the world that is.

You are one break-through away from creating a better future.

Do you feel that?

It’s you!

And you are significant.

You mean everything to me and I think of you everyday.  In fact, even though I may not know all that makes you whole, your very presence is important and I care about you.

You are here, you have been here, and you are coming.

And I believe in your spirit.

You… Are humanity.

Many years ago, in that summer of ’85 the destiny of my brother, and my family, would change forever.  Jerry Lucido was just 12-years-old when he was suddenly diagnosed with early-onset schizophrenia.  I was only 5-years-old at the time, and from that point on, I’d never leave his side.

Going forward, the events surrounding Jerry’s transformation imprinted my outlook on everything.  A new lens for my impressionable eyes.  And so, I began to ask questions.   What exactly happened to Jerry’s ability to make the choices that are truly his own?  What happened to the sanctity of his mind?  I would wonder… and wonder, how did the rest of the minds contribute to these consequences?

Eventually, in 1997, in my last year of highschool, Jerry and I had a conversation as we always do.  I asked him, “What do want your life to accomplish?”

He replied, “I want people to live better than I have.”

In that moment, my brother became my hero.

And the vision for The Re-Mind Project was born.

We talked some more and outlined a plan.  It was then that I decided to become a filmmaker.  This was the sole reason.  Guided by the principle of helping others live better lives,on their own accord, yet within an embryonic support system where a growing number of people champion the same mission.  I felt that the world might benefit from a new focus, and that a motion picture was an effective way to explore such a thing together.

There is much to know of Jerry.  Of who he is.  Where he’s been.  One day, his story will be revealed.  Until then I am thrilled that he’s been introduced to all of you now.  That is in large part due to Jacoby Shaddix.

Jacoby and I are from the same community known as Vacaville, California.  I was still in high school when Papa Roach took the world stage, and while I didn’t know Jacoby personally then, I was friends with many who did.  Here was this person who, yes, was tearing up loudspeakers and causing a raucous – but people believed in him.  Something about his character connected.

I would eventually discover that this specific trait is that Jacoby sees the best in people. Seven years ago Jacoby and I crossed paths and aligned upon a common ground.  A mutual passion to help advance the world toward greater Mental Health.  Jacoby was one of the first to see past the asterisk of Jerry’s diagnosis and see the humanity in my brother and me.  If he didn’t give us the benefit-of-the-doubt, there is a good chance we wouldn’t have made it this far.

Compassion Is Genius.

Jerry and I are honored that Jacoby would embrace the role of Founding Ambassador for The Re-Mind Project.

This week, we launch The Re-Mind Project, our humble effort to approach such a sacred, personal thing as the mind with dignity, respect and empowerment.  We are just getting started and glad to welcome all to the journey!

We are grateful to everyone who is doing their very best in every aspect of society to overcome the challenges surrounding mental illness.  Re-Mind is excited to join the efforts.

While my family and I have endured quite the struggle, we know now that we are not alone.  So many have faced similar adversity and so many still are.

And even though I know the challenges will not end…

… nor will our resolve.

Today we take command of the change that we make.

And together we are guided by a simple but most powerful thing.

The good of all.

This is the best in us.

We are humanity.
